Soil amelioration induced by nurse shrubs in coal mines reclaimed to pastures and their synergistic effects with grazing

چکیده

Native shrubs facilitate the establishment of oak seedlings in opencast coal mines rehabilitated to pastures Northern Spain, under a Mediterranean sub-humid climate. We evaluate soil changes as one possible facilitative effects nurse shrubs. hypothesize that on mining soils can improve edaphic properties directly and indirectly by reducing negative trampling grazing ungulates. Thus, we assessed combined (plots with vs without shrubs) fence for preventing browsing trampling) upon reclaimed mine. Chemical such electrical conductivity, K+, cation exchange capacity, C/N ratio reached higher values beneath shrubs’ canopies, so did total organic matter, N, C, P, available Mg2+ but only grazing. In contrast, pH was outside shrubs; also Ca2+, though absence With grazing, Na+ decreased Among physical properties, bulk density increased porosity grazed plots, whereas sand content clay locations. Water holding capacity water were highest ungrazed areas. Overall, found have positive direct effect fertility, especially relevant areas because synergistic effects, indirect they attenuate particularly compaction, livestock wild ungulates trampling. Therefore, these results demonstrate how contribute amelioration, helping plant mines, which has restoration implications pasture forest recovery.

Soil Compaction: Effects and Amelioration

Soil compaction was identified as the cause of ‘growth stunting disease’ in sultana grapes and ‘red death’ in cotton at the Lower Orange River and Vaalharts irrigation schemes. In an experiment growth stunting disease was eradicated completely and yields of sultanas increased substantially by deep cultivation, which eliminated compacted soil layers. Ripping increased the quality of tobacco, and...

Grazing intensity and soil depth effects on soil properties in alpine meadow pastures of Qilian Mountain in northwest China

In the mountainous rangeland of inland arid regions of Eurasia, seasonal grazing has been important to local communities for production of food, fiber, and for income, for the past thousand years. Recent population increases and other changes have put traditional grazing systems under pressure. However, empirical data describing soil properties or the impact of traditional grazing practice on t...

Innovative approach to strata reinforcement in coal mines with reference to evaluation cable bolts shear strength

There is an increasing need to determine accurately the strength properties of tendons for an effective ground control on mines and underground structures as well as on modelling simulations. The strength properties of cables, used as cable bolts, have been evaluated mainly by their ultimate tensile strength, as this kind of test can be carried out in the field as well as in the laboratory. Onl...

Assessing metal pollution in ponds constructed for controlling runoff from reclaimed coal mines.

Constructing ponds to protect downstream ecosystems is a common practice in opencast coal mine reclamation. As these ponds remain integrated in the landscape, it is important to evaluate the extent of the effect of mine pollution on these ecosystems. However, this point has not been sufficiently addressed in the literature. The main objective of this work was to explore the metal pollution in m...
